12 Sep Report: Disinformation and Civil Society Mapping in the Baltic States
In an era where disinformation poses a persistent threat to democratic societies, understanding its complex and evolving nature is crucial for societal resilience.
In collaboration with TechSoup regional partners through the Digital Activism Program, Civic Resilience Initiative contributed to the preparation of the 2023-2024 Disinformation and Civil Society Regional Mapping Reports. These reports focus on four key regions in Central and Eastern Europe: the Western Balkans, the Visegrad Region, the Black Sea Region, and the Baltics.
Each report provides a comprehensive analysis of the disinformation trends, the impact of external actors, the war in Ukraine, and the unique challenges faced by civil society organizations in these regions.
The report on the Baltic countries, carried out by the Civic Resilience Initiative, revealed that while the Baltic states are united in their support for Ukraine, this solidarity brings unique challenges, especially for civil society organizations (CSOs) facing financial constraints and disinformation attacks.
The report on the Baltic countries, conducted by the Civic Resilience Initiative, revealed that while the Baltic states are united in their support for Ukraine, this solidarity brings unique challenges, particularly for civil society organizations (CSOs) facing financial constraints and disinformation attacks.
Key insights:
• CSOs in the Baltic region are under pressure due to limited resources and a constant barrage of disinformation aimed at weakening democratic values.
• The influx of Ukrainian refugees has fostered a sense of unity, but long-term challenges related to integration, such as housing and language acquisition, remain significant.
• Disinformation tactics in the Baltic states are evolving, requiring CSOs to adapt their strategies to protect their societies and preserve democratic integrity.
